A Brief History
of the
Wedding Cake
The wedding cake is one of the most dramatic elements of a wedding reception. Often displayed for guests to admire, the cutting of the cake is, traditionally, a highlight for every bride and groom. The significance of eating cake at a wedding dates as far back as the Roman Empire. Romans made simple barley cakes and crumbled them over the bride's head for fertility. In the Middle Ages, small sweat buns were traditionally brought to the bride and groom by guests and stacked before the couple, who would try to kiss over the mound as a sign of prosperity and a hope for a large family.
Today, the wedding cake is universally served at all weddings everywhere and, you will be happy to know that the traditional sometimes dry uninteresting white wedding cake is no longer expected. The creative confections provided today are a feast for both the eyes and the taste.
I would like to extend my personal invitation to visit our shop at 1703 Mediterranean Ave. in Virginia Beach to discuss your upcoming wedding. Incredible Edibles has baked in the Hampton Roads area since 1989 and has enjoyed working with hundreds of brides in planning, designing and delivering their very special cake.
Whether it is a cake that you have always visualized or one of our custom designs, we work very closely with you to provide your own dream cake for this very special day.
